R omantic relationships between university professors and their students are becoming less and less acceptable. Many of the new university policies that have emerged in the last few years have focused on undergraduates and how to better protect them, typically with a campus-wide ban on staff dating undergrads. But a number of universities also demand that faculty members do not start relationships with graduate students they supervise.
This month, Princeton University went further and declared that faculty members were no longer allowed to date any graduate student—even if the couple works in different departments. Pre-existing relationships are exempt from the new rule. The university is encouraging greater collaboration across departments, Burdine says, which extends the concerns about unequal power between a professor and a student beyond the immediate supervisory relationship.

Faculty, administrators, and others who educate, supervise, evaluate, employ, counsel, coach or otherwise make decisions or recommendations as to the other person in connection with their employment or education at the University, or who otherwise have actual or apparent authority over a student or subordinate, should understand the fundamentally asymmetrical nature of the relationship.

The relevant supervisor, dean or director shall have the authority, in consultation with the Office of Equal Opportunity, to set reasonable conditions to eliminate both the substance and appearance of conflict of interest or abuse of power or authority; to prevent the establishment of direct authority; to minimize and attenuate indirect authority; or to grant an exception to the policy; provided, however, that exceptions will be granted only in extenuating and extraordinary circumstances.
The relevant supervisor, dean or director may also take measures to prevent the deprivation of educational or employment opportunities for the student or subordinate, and will have the authority, in consultation with the Office of Equal Opportunity, to make exceptions to normal academic rules and policies as warranted by the circumstances. Although it is recognized that the student or subordinate may be a full and willing participant in an Intimate Relationship, both the responsibility for adhering to this policy and the consequences for violating it fall upon the person in a position of power or authority, rather than the student or subordinate.

Some places have policies about it, and some don’t. There is too many things that can happen. I have seen people lose jobs over this sort of situation. It is always tricky in college since there is nothing illegal about a teacher or TA dating student only ethical dating social considerations. If you feel the need to date an undergraduate student, find someone in a different field!
Not everyone picks their significant others based on such rational criteria! It’s possible they “picked” someone in their field because that’s who they met, and who shared their interests. But really, it seems like it should be possible to keep them at arms-length, at least until you’re not directly responsible for grading or supervising them. I think this is a really good point — dating isn’t undergrad only way you can be put in a conflict of interest position. Sometimes undergrads invite their TAs to their parties, which I always politely decline.
I how to get over someone youre not dating to be undergrad, but I’m not friends with student while they are in my course. For the person who said it’s okay if you are only providing office hours — it still could be a problem if the TA has how to or is perceived to have access to any sort of exam dating or assignment solutions. It grad also be complicated if, for example, your student has an ex-partner in the same class and the “ex” complains about you graduate helping them as much because of your relationship with the first student.
